Margaret's Challenge - The Breast Cancer 3-day

"Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence." - Thoreau

If I told you that I’m walking 60 miles for 3 days to help women with undetected breast cancer find out early enough to survive, would you support me?

What if I told you that right now there are over 1,000,000 women in the United States with undetected breast cancer? Would you sponsor me to help them find out early enough that they survive to watch their friends and family grow up and grow old?

How about if I told you that 70% of those women have absolutely no risk factors for breast cancer. They don’t even know they should be checking. Would you sponsor me to help educate them?

We're all lucky to have access to regular medical care. Millions of women in the United States do not. Would you sponsor me to help save the lives of these medically underserved women?

Here’s my last question: Would you sponsor me if I told you that somewhere in the United States someone’s mother, sister, aunt or very best friend is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes…and every 13 minutes breast cancer claims another life.

My name is Margaret, and I'm a junior at St. Louis University. This is my second 3-day walk that I'm participating in, I also did the Chicago 3-day in 2002. I have decided to do this walk because I wanted to feel like I was doing something for everyone who is suffering through breast cancer. The good news is that this is a fight that we absolutely can do something about. This is a fight that I feel very compelled to do something about. I am sure that many of you know a family member or friend who has fought this disease. Currently one of my Aunt's is healthy after courageously fighting her second battle against breast cancer. My mom's other sister defeated an early type of breast cancer a few years ago. Because of this family connection it means that my mom, my grandma, my cousins and myself are all at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. This is the main part of the reason why I am committed to doing everything within my power to help wipe out this disease.

That means that along with my mom and my Aunt Liz I'm walking in the New York 2004 Breast Cancer 3 Day during the weekend of August 6-8 - all 60 miles. That means I’ve committed to reaching a personal goal of $2000, and a team goal of $6,000. It also means that I’m doing everything I can think of to get the word out that we can win the fight against cancer.

I need your help. You are able to help me in several ways. I am currently training and preparing for this event, and I need your prayers and emotional support. Or if you also feel called to this challenge we'd love to have you as a teammate! But the biggest way you can support me and the cause is through financial support. Reaching out to help those who will never even know our name is a beautiful example of kindness.

The money raised will go towards non-profit breast health programs, state of the art medical research and to provide support for medically underserved women in the United States.
